Social mobility is a key factor in the improvement of the social conditions of people of less privilege. It is defined by the Encyclopedia Britannica as the “movement of individuals, families, or groups through a system of social hierarchy or stratification.”
Upward mobility occurs when people or groups move from one social class to a higher class. Education is the driving factor for this achievement.
This list provides a handy reference for identifying the colleges and universities that provide the most opportunity for upward social mobility. It is divided into two sections of twenty-five schools each. The first features colleges and universities that charge tuition, but offer Pell Grants, which are awarded to students from low-income backgrounds, and other forms of scholarships and financial aid.
The second group lists highly selective schools that offer full tuition, room, and board for low-income students that are accepted.

The American Talent Initiative is an alliance of colleges and universities that are committed to expanding access and opportunity to low- and moderate-income students. Although the colleges listed below are free for students who are from families with a low income, their acceptance rates are often low making them highly competitive schools.
However, for highly motivated and talented students, few schools offer more opportunities for social advancement than those listed below which cooperate in the American Talent Initiative in order to make superior education available to all.
In a recent report, the ATI showed that U.S. colleges and universities with graduation rates of 70% or higher enrolled more than 20,000 more students who qualified for Pell grants over the course of 2 years.
