FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What should I consider while searching for a quality university that provides online distance learning options?

First and foremost, you should only consider programs that are properly accredited, preferably by a regionally accrediting organization. There are three main reasons to consider, such as:

  • To ensure that the education you receive meets the high standards put forth by the accrediting organization; therefore, assuring you the skills and knowledge needed in a specific field,
  • Your credits earned can be properly transferred or applied to your next degree program,
  • Employers appreciate an excellent accrediting affiliation. It assures them that you have been taught the proper skills needed to perform your job well.

What’s the Difference Between Regional and National Accreditation?

Accrediting vocational and trade schools and career programs that offer degrees and certifications is the responsibility of national accreditation agencies such as the Distance Education & Training Council (DETC) and the Accrediting Council for Continuing Education and Training (ACCET).

Regional accreditation agencies, on the other hand, such as the Higher Learning Commission (HLC) and the Middle States Commission on Higher Education (MSCHE), are in charge of ensuring that academic institutions maintain high standards. These universities and colleges can be non-profit or state-owned.

Will employers know I earned my degree online?

Typically, when you receive your diploma upon graduation, it will not specify “how” you earned your degree; however, if an employer is aware that you earned it online… it should not deter them from hiring you. Online distance learning programs are prevalent now and allow people who might not ordinarily have the opportunity to earn a degree actually get one! In fact, earning an online degree takes dedication and discipline… your employer should be impressed with your determination to earn your degree, as well as hold down a full-time job and attend to family responsibilities, if applicable.

What learning formats are used through online schools?

Generally, you can earn your degree from the comfort of your home; however, lab or clinical work may be required to complete your degree, depending on the discipline. Most universities utilize a Learning Management System (LMS) that allows students to log in to their accounts and access their coursework very easily.

Either of two formats may apply:

  • Asynchrounous format: Allows students to log in at any time of the day or night, complete their work, and return it to the proper instructor. Although this format is the most convenient and flexible, there will still be course deadlines that will need to be met. In addition, you will need to be a self-motivator and manage your time wisely to excel in this type of program.
  • Synchrounous format: Requires students to attend classes or lectures at a certain time, on a specific day, most often, through a camera/video. These types of classes are often the same ones that are being attended by students in the traditional classroom setting – they are just allowing you to “sit-in” as well through video means. For those who need extra structure or motivation, this is the best choice!

How Much Does an Online Degree Cost?

The cost of an online degree depends on several factors. These factors include the school, the level of education, and tuition discounts. Tuition for an online bachelor’s degree should range between $38,000 and $60,000. Luckily, some colleges provide tuition discounts to fully online students. In-state students also benefit from the lowest tuition rates at public colleges. In general, public colleges are less expensive than private colleges.
