The Best Online Community College in Every State

associates degree
Contents

Are you looking for the best online community college in your area of the country? Since the expansion of community college systems across America in the ’70s and ’80s, community colleges have quietly been the unsung heroes of American higher education.

These schools tend to do a better job of preparing a local workforce in high-need areas, for a lower cost, and with the flexibility needed to serve local students, than traditional universities. Many community colleges have pushed their tailored programming into the 21st century by meeting the students of today where they are as well, online.

The benefit of attending a community college within your own state is often that in-state or district pricing dramatically lowers cost. There are several states in the country that also offer 100% free community college degrees to in-state first-time students.

Many community colleges have transfer agreements with 4-year schools. This means if you graduate with above a certain GPA, you gain automatic admission to a bachelor’s-level program.

Frequently Asked Questions

What are “community” colleges?

Community colleges, also known as junior colleges, are typically your hometown version of a smaller-scale university. In general, most medium to large-sized towns or cities have a community college that is convenient for everyone to attend.

How long does it take to earn a degree from a community college?

Most community colleges offer associate degree programs. Typically, you can earn an associate degree within two years.

Why should I consider going to my hometown’s community college?

Often, the first two years of college consist of general education requirements. At this point, you will also have the opportunity to decide on a major in which you would like to pursue an associate degree. Upon completion, you can choose to continue your education as you transfer your credits to a bachelor’s degree program.

What’s the difference between “community college” and “college”?

Generally, an area college or state university will offer four-year Bachelor’s degree programs, while a community college will usually only provide two-year Associate degree programs; however, this is not always the case. Some community colleges offer bachelor’s degrees, but it’s not the norm!

What are the advantages of attending community college?

For the same quality degree programs that you can obtain from a university, the tuition costs of a community college is much less. In fact, some states will allow you to attend for free if you reside in that state.

What are the disadvantages of attending a community college?

While community colleges do their best to provide a wide array of degree topics, they are often limited in their offerings. If you attend a community college, make sure it is properly accredited and that your credits can be transferred to a bachelor’s degree program.

What states offer “free” community college opportunities?

At this time, there are seventeen states that offer free community college for their residents. But keep in mind that tuition may be free, but other expenses like textbooks, travel, as well as room and board (if attending on-campus) are not included. Free tuition states include Arkansas, California, Delaware, Hawaii, Indiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, New York, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, Rhode Island, Tennessee, and Washington.

Do community colleges offer online degree programs?

Yes, most offer their degrees through a convenient and flexible online distance learning format. This is a great opportunity for those who are working while earning their degree. Check out the best community college in each state below offering online classes.

How Does a Technical School Differ from a Community College?

A technical or trade college typically teaches skills that can be applied in the workplace. They devote less time to academics and more to skills. You’ll practice your skills until you can follow a plan, such as a blueprint, and produce a satisfactory product or service. On the other hand, a community college is similar to a prep school, with an emphasis on academics, though some also provide some skills training.

A community college is similar to a full-fledged four-year university, but the programs are shorter and usually result in a two-year certificate rather than a diploma. And, if you want to continue your education, most or all of your courses will be transferable.
